National Carnival News

Each year MAF awards the national carnival to one of its state bodies. The carnival is the centrepiece of the MAF year, where national championships are played across 5 age divisions. Each age division has two divisions to cater for all the States and Territories that participate. Normally the larger and more traditional football states compete in Division 1, but over recent years, this has started to change as Queensland and Tasmania in particularly highlight their depth in players.

In addition, MAF also host its annual Hall of Fame Dinner where players and administrators are honoured for their service to our great game. The carnival is held over a week with three games played starting on the Sunday, then Wednesday and finally the Saturday. The final day of the carnival is celebrated with a presentation night marking the closure of the carnival with over 1200 players and partners attending. State Champions, All Australians, Sprint and Drop-Kick Champions are recognised during the presentations.

The carnival represents a real difference to our WA competition, in that games are to be won and premierships (National Championships) awarded. Having said that the same spirit and friendship extends across the competition as found in our Club competition in WA. Many past travelers have formed friendships that now last a lifetime and they look forward to renewing acquaintances over a cold beer at each new carnival

2006 National Carnival held in Maroochydore, Queensland

The 2006 carnival saw WA come away with two National Championship in the Seniors and Super Seniors categories. Both were in Division 2 of those age competitions.

This year saw WA largest travelling party with five full teams and partners and children, totaling in excess of 250. As expected, the weather was sensational and the WA contingent not only enjoyed the football but also took in many of the great attractions of the Queensland.

Greg Hooper from Albany won the 2006 MAF WA MVP (known as the Thompson family medal). Hoops also won the Division 2 Fairest and Best Player in the Seniors aged competition polling 14 votes out a possible 15 from the three games.

With over 15 different clubs supplying players for the State Teams, the 2006 carnival truly highlighted our motto of "Football for Kicks".

2005 National Carnival held in Adelaide, SA

The National Carnival in Adelaide was a real success for MAF WA, with our Supers and Seniors winning the trophies in their respective divisions. The camaraderie of all players, coaches, support staff and supporters was terrific and went a long way to helping us have an enjoyable time. Many thanks to our coaches, team managers, medical and support staff especially Dr Doug McCarthy who had his time cut out getting players back on the park after suffering injuries on day one. Another special mention must go to Billy Johnson who assisted in the stabilising and eventual recovery of a NSW player who suffered a heart problem in the over 55's game.

The 2005 Carnival saw the introduction of the MAF WA Most Valuable Player Award. This spectacular medal has been donated by long time MAF WA player Brian Thompson and his family and will be an important part of future National Carnivals. Many thanks to the Thompson family for their initiative and generosity. Congratulations to Trevor Taylor from the Rockingham Club on being the inaugural winner of the medal. Trevor was a member of the Super Seniors team.
